Funky Tote Bags

Springtime is a time of gift giving and we are both preparing lots of gifts for our upcoming travels to see our kids in the States.

Hana is making placemats, microwave cozies, and tote bags.

Amy is making quilts, placemats and tote bags.  Here are some of them --

Outer Space Quilts

My daughter and her husband are moving into a new apartment.  Their two boys will get a bunk bed with stairs (instead of a ladder) and the bottom bunk will be a double bed.  They say that the double bed is great for sleep-overs, but I know that it will be so much more comfortable for the parents falling asleep while putting the boys to sleep!

I made matching quilts for the new room.  Thank you to Hana for the inspiration and for the special outer space fabrics!  Look for the spaceships, planets, meteors, and astronauts!

Here is the double bed quilt --

It's Hanukah Time!

My 6 1/2 year-old grand-daughter "needs" a new quilt for a big girl!  So, I made her one in the new disappearing nine-patch style, as a Hanukah surprise! I hope she will love the navy blue and orange!

Couch Quilts

I have been busy making the following three couch quilts, all of them for the winter, with flannel backing.  I enjoy making these because they are an easy size to manage in the quilting stage.  Usually, with big double bed quilts, I find it very hard to maneuver.  But these are fun and easy.

This quilt is in the disappearing nine patch style --

These two are made for my twin granddaughters who share a bedroom.  They are made in different styles with some matching fabrics. The top one is also in the disappearing nine patch style.

Disappearing Nine Patch

During these long months of lockdown, we decided to try a new design for some of our couch quilts.  In an article by Janet Wickell on The Spruce Crafts website, I saw an example of the Magic Nine Patch or Disappearing Nine Patch, as seen in Karin Hallby’s 2002 book, Magic Pillows, Hidden Quilts.  Some call the technique Tossed Nine Patch (by Eleanor Burns).

You begin with a classic 9 patch. We used 4 1/2" squares, so that each 9 patch measured 12" square. Slice off 25% on two sides to create two new smaller units. Then add the smaller units to the original square in any of many interesting combinations, providing you with new basic squares which now measure 11" square. For a couch quilt, we used 12 of the 9 patches and added borders.

Both of these projects are still unfinished.  But we're having so much fun experimenting!
