New Coexistence Quilt

 This quilt turned out to be a stunning work of art, all due to the wonderful embroidery provided by the Bedouin women at Desert Embroidery at Laquiya in the northern Negev.  I also like the peacock fabric which surrounds the embroidery.  

Wall Hanging

My sister and her husband are becoming snowbirds!  They bought a house with a pool on Sanibel Island and have asked me to make them something special for their walls.  First thing I did -- I went to Laquiya to order pieces of Bedouin embroidery in turquoise and gold.   I used the embroidery as four corners around a central Florida sunburst, and two long pieces of embroidery, on the sides.

It's a Girl!

We both have three grown children and it seems that we both have one who has expressed some interest in learning quilting.  Here is a first project by Sari celebrating her 4-month-old little girl.  This hanging was made special for the wall above the baby's crib.

Majestic Mountains

Hana's daughter lives with her family in the Rockies.  Here's the wall hanging that Hana made for their living room!  It's stupendous!  It's amazing how appropriate it is for a family living in a gorgeous mountainous region!

Creating A Family Heirloom

Our friend Cheryl decided that she wanted to make something special for her daughter's 40th birthday.  This wall hanging is meant to illustrate many of the aspects of her daughter's family life.  Cheryl used applique to cut out and attach the various elements.  See how many of the elements you can identify -- sefer torah, puzzle pieces, and much much more!

Wall Hangings by Rachel Hubers

I went to the Jerusalem Theater the other evening for a concert, and found an amazing exhibit of quilted wall hangings by Rachel Hubers.

I chose to share two of the exhibited works -- one is a stunning floral piece and the other is an impressive desert landscape.

By the way, we enjoyed the concert too!

And you shall love your neighbor as yourself!

As a gift for a friend, my family asked me to make a wall hanging which integrates this verse (Leviticus 19:18).  I chose to use Bedouin embroidery -- it just seems appropriate to integrate something from a "neighbor" in making this piece of art! 

A stunning Wall Hanging

Our friend Cheryl asked for help in creating this wall hanging.  We gave advice, technical assistance and a bit of inspiration.  She did all the hard work! 

Using beautiful batik fabrics that she found in a specialty fabric shop, she created this "scrappy" wall hanging, which she plans to hang in her guest room.  Pretty special, isn't it?  Congratulations to Cheryl!!

In Memory of my Mother

Everything I know about sewing, I learned from my mother.  We had an old Singer sewing machine in the basement, near a ping pong table which was piled high with stuff, and she sat there patiently doing her sewing.  We spent a lot of time there together, especially when I was in junior high school.

I have been trying to think of a theme that would bring me warm memories -- and I came up with this quilt which features birds, seen through a series of latticed windows. 

 Even though it is January,  spring is coming (symbolized by Tu B'shvat) and the days are slowly getting longer.  Every year in the springtime, I remember standing by the dining room window with my Mom, watching for robin redbreasts -- the first sign of spring in the northeast!  We had a casement window, with a screen that had a small box that could slide, so that you could get to the handle of the window which opened outwards.  So, I have a very definite picture of our peeping through little windows, watching for the robins.  Here you can see the birds, framed with a latticed affect, and a peacock fabric (I can just imagine the robins "strutting" around on our front lawn), and bordered by bright yellow sunshine and blue sky!  This quilt measures 40 X 50".

Crib Quilt with Matching Wall Hanging

This crib quilt, also made for Lilach, is in the sunburst pattern, with little pussy cats in the middle of each sunburst block.


The wall hanging is made from similar fabrics.
