In honor of the Bedouin of Israel

The Bedouin of the northern Negev have suffered during this tragic period, and there have also been stories of wonderful heroism on their part.  So, I decided to make this couch quilt (which features a piece of embroidery made by the women at Desert Embroidery at Laquiya) in honor of the Bedouin of Israel.  

 

Since I had another piece of the same embroidery, I also made this double bed quilt for my daughter.  It features the same colors and both quilts have a cozy flannel backing!

A Quilt for my own Home

 I made this coexistence quilt for our Riverdale apartment.  An oversized couch quilt, meant to match our dark green couch,  it features two pieces of Bedouin embroidery.  Thank you to two of my granddaughters for their help in the piecing and designing!

A Coexistence Quilt

 This double-bed quilt features a small piece of Bedouin embroidery at its center.  The rest of the quilt uses strong colors to accent the embroidery.  I designed and made the quilt for my niece who lives in Delaware.

Hope she enjoys it for many years of health!

New Coexistence Quilt

 This quilt turned out to be a stunning work of art, all due to the wonderful embroidery provided by the Bedouin women at Desert Embroidery at Laquiya in the northern Negev.  I also like the peacock fabric which surrounds the embroidery.  

My latest gift item

This square highlights a beautiful piece of Bedouin embroidery. I made this as a gift for a friend in Atlanta, and it is meant to jazz up her dining room table! I hope she likes lots of colors!

New Table Runner

This table runner is brand new! It includes three pieces of Bedouin embroidery from the women at the Center for Bedouin Embroidery, Laquiya, in the northern Negev.  I love their work and enjoy integrating their pieces into my work!

Embroidered Arm Rests

My daughter and her husband asked for something "neat" to cover the arms of their couch.  These matching pieces incorporate Bedouin embroidery and look really nice on the brown couch.

New Baby Quilts

We have been preparing another batch of baby quilts for delivery to the Bedouin shop in Laquiya.  These quilts are jointly made -- we make the cuddly quilts which frame their stunning embroidery!

Coexistence Baby Quilts

We went to visit the Bedouin women at Desert Embroidery in Laquiya and delivered to them a new line of baby quilts integrating their embroidery.  Here is the first batch!

We took home a whole pile of pieces of embroidery so that we could make more baby quilts for them!

Wall Hanging

My sister and her husband are becoming snowbirds!  They bought a house with a pool on Sanibel Island and have asked me to make them something special for their walls.  First thing I did -- I went to Laquiya to order pieces of Bedouin embroidery in turquoise and gold.   I used the embroidery as four corners around a central Florida sunburst, and two long pieces of embroidery, on the sides.

Hot off the Press!!

We went together to pick up our embroidery order at Desert Embroidery in Laquiya and talked with the women about helping them create a new "line" of products -- baby quilts that include their embroidery.  They gave us a few samples of embroidery to use in the first few quilts, which they want to sell in their shop.

Here is the first one!!!  It has calming colors and has a flannel backing.

New Coexistence Couch Quilt

This might be the prettiest quilt I've ever made.  I can say that modestly because the real beauty in this quilt is not as a result of my work but rather from the two pieces of embroidery that make up the central element.  These pieces of embroidery come from the Desert Embroidery Shop in Laqiya, made by Bedouin women in the area of the northern Negev.  Thank you for such beautiful pieces of embroidery!

Table Runners

My sister-in-law just renovated her Manhattan apartment and I would like to give her a gift.  It's hard to choose between these two new table runners.  The pieces of Palestinian embroidery were purchased from Maha who lives in Bethlehem.

Table Runner

This table runner is made with a piece of embroidery made by the Bedouin women at the "Desert Embroidery" shop in Laquiya.  They explained to me that the central element is called the "sheikh" because he is the center of everything in the community!  And to think that I thought it was a flower!!!

This floral couch quilt was made in the "coexistence" style, using a piece of Palestinian embroidery made by a woman named Maha who lives in Bethlehem.  I have never met Maha, since we live on different sides of the "divide", but we have become facebook friends!  When I want new pieces of embroidery, she puts up pictures of different styles and I can choose what I want! 

In addition to the embroidery, this quilt integrates the element of "building blocks" which are so easy to make and so popular as a quilting style.

A Perfect Gift

My friend from the Chesapeake Bay area brought me a package of fabrics that she bought in India.  I quickly got to work and made her a coexistence quilt, combining Bedouin embroidery with some of the fabric that she gave me! 

Here is a close-up on the embroidery, which was made so carefully and so professionally by one of the women who work at the Desert Embroidery non-profit workshop in Laquiya in the northern Negev. 

The finished quilt is the size of a couch quilt, meant to be used as a decorative element on her couch.

Table Runners

This table runner features a beautiful piece of Bedouin embroidery made by my friends at Desert Embroidery in Laquiya.  These women make extraordinary traditional pieces which I am honored to integrate into my quilting.

If you have been following this blog for a while, you already know that I love combining purple with green.  These were the colors at my daughter's wedding, ten years ago!

This table runner was designed by my oldest granddaughter -- she's 6 years old!  She wanted to make a table runner for their coffee table in honor of her father's upcoming birthday!  She has a surprising talent for putting together colors and designing this piece.  She did the design and I did the implementation!

Couch Quilt

This couch quilt features a stunning piece of maroon embroidery made by the Bedouin women at "Desert Embroidery" in Laquiya.  I chose this piece of embroidery as a centerpiece for this quilt. In addition, I used an element called "building blocks" to symbolize our building a life together in this land. The quilt measures 44 X 60 inches.  

Here it is decorating the home of our friends in London.

Burnt Orange

This "coexistence" quilt features a large piece of minimalist embroidery that I bought from a woman who lives in Bethlehem.  In order to properly emphasize the embroidery, I tried very hard to bring out its colors by using sky blue and burnt orange.  I also used "building blocks" which is a feature that I've used many times before.  This is meant to be a decorative couch quilt.
